Zuni Owl Effigy, size 6 1/2" tall, no artist name, what is the possible age??
Tesuque Rain God, 6" tall, from research, possibly late 1800's, early 1900's. What is possible age?

Tesuque Rain God first, because that information can be confirmed by research done by Duane Anderson, and in his book "When Rain Gods Reigned."
The hair detail, surface slip, and type of decoration determines their earliest possible dates. The first ones, prior to 1905, were covered with micaceous clay. most had sculpted hair, and a wide-open mouth. The cream-colored slip started in 1905. Colored poster paint decorations outlined in black began in the mid-1920s. So the mid-1920s would be the earliest this could be. All those methods were continued, up to the present, including terra cotta slip, added after the 1960s.
The rain design on his forehead was most popular in the 1926-1950 time period, and that was when the slit mouth shape, the standard used to the present, became the most-commonly used.
The Zuni owl probably dates to the ca. 1935-1960s. Earlier ones usually had feet. The dominant black decoration on the tips of the wings, beak, and "ears" and in the use of dots and lines covering most of the surface, was most popular in that time period.
