Got this at an auction where the folks had done some level of overseas traveling but I have no idea if this is foreign or domestic. There is no marking anywhere on it so give any clues. It is made of copper and could certainly use some serious polishing. About 12" long and 3-1/2" wide.

The top plates slide off to each side revealing an insert that appears to be made of brass screen. The screen is very discolored in places, especially near the center which makes me suspect that it supported a flame. This further make me think it might be Asian in origin as I could picture this being in a temple of some sort. I could be way off base though. If it is some type of burner, I have no idea what the fuel would have been.

Would like to entertain refurbishing it but the top is crimped in place and I would have to pull the crimps apart to get to and replace the brass screen and whatever is under it.

Any insight into the origin of this piece and verification on what it would have been used for would be very much appreciated.

    Thanks.... Doug

Not sure how it would work as an incense burner unless some type of scented oil was poured into it.

How would it be used as a medical sterilizer? I do know this came from the estate that had a couple doctors in the family as far back as the 1800's. Would it have been lit and the instruments placed on top or simply passed over the flame to sterilize them? Can you advise on what era this would be from?
