This Victorian glass basket was a flea market find about 17 years ago, sold as Murano glass. It is made from two layers of cased glass, a uranium bearing ivory with a pale blue interior. It is covered all over with a wonderfully tactile hobnail pattern (I love lumpy, bumpy glass) & also has an applied clear handle which has a stylised bamboo texture. Measuring 13 cm tall including the handle, 16 cm wide aross the top & 10.5 across the base, it has a neatly polished pontil. Another interesting thing about this basket is how the ends of the handle fit into applied "pockets" of the ivory coloured glass on either side. I have many baskets & no others have this curious feature. I feel that this piece is most likely English. John Walsh Walsh made a type of glass called "Electric Blue", which was the same blue seen here, with a uranium ivory casing on the inside. This basket has that rather distinctive colour scheme in reverse.
I love anything hobnail, and the bamboo style handle is a great change from thorns!
Many thanks Karen, so glad you're enjoying it! Bamboo handle seem to be quite uncommon...hope to find another basket with one someday.
