This a 6 inch tall Chinese brush pot. It is 4 inches in diameter. I came across it and do not know any history. I have seen similar figures on 18th century brush pots but have no idea how to identify if it is really old, or Chinese or a reproduction. The walls are more than half an inch thick. The bottom is much thinner and appears to be a different kind of wood. The carvings are very ornate and beautiful. Can anyone help me identify this objec

Well I would say its Chinese do how the people look and it looks to be made of bamboo due to the color and how the surface looks if you have a picture of the bottom I would know for sure. It has some age to it by how the surface looks it has some fine cracks form age . Does it have any writing on it?

Thank you much for your prompt response. I will try to post a picture of the bottom on Monday. It has been fascinating researching Chinese brush pots and I am very curious about this one. I found the scene with the little building with the people in it depicted on 18th century brush pots but maybe that is just a common image. I look forward to your further comments. The bottom is much thinner than the walls and appears to be a different kind of wood. I was going to post a view from the top but I am still trying to figure out how to add a photo to a reply comment. More to come...

I managed to post a picture of the bottom and another of the side. There does not appear to be any writing. Hope this helps

Its bamboo.Every section that you see on bamboo has that thin wall on the bottom. That why they made cups and brush pots.you can make a lot out of bamboo.

Do you think it may be as old as from the 18th century? The images are similar to those I have seen on other brush pots of that age. Do you have any guess on age? I have read that dating these items can be very difficult. Are there people that could look at this?

I would not have a problems saying its late 18th early 19th it has the right look and wear I would expect to see on a older piece. But to give a pinpoint date that would be very hard to do. I am sure you could find someone that deals in Asian antiques but give you a date would be a very hard to do. If it was signed that would help pin point to a artist that you could attribute to by look at other pieces that they done.

Thank you so much for your input. It is such a beautiful piece and you have shed some light on the history. I don't know if it has value but it does look good in my house.
