We found this is our great grandmothers kitchen and she pass away in the early 1950's. We thought maybe used when cooking but inside of this looks like dry up soap. Just have no clue. Really different. I also have two other items and not sure of them also and will post.
It is a soap keep (or soap saver). You would put the bits and pieces of leftover soap in it and use it to clean clothes in an old wringer washer, or for hand washing clothes.

Celiene, Thanks so very much! I thought maybe spices and put in soup. Then we figure it was soap so that was not possible.
