This miniature jug & basin set by Welz has a special significance for me, as it was purchased on my first ever overseas trip. I got this at the Bermonsey Markets in London in April 2003. I did have some trouble finding where the markets were & ended up arriving there when the stall holders were packing up, but I managed to spot this little pair & got them for a very reasonable price. The next day was a Saturday & I went to Portobello Road where I bought several more pieces including a pair of large hand vases, a uranium thorn vase, & a Burmese glass epergne trumpet. Later, having drinks in the Earl Of Ladbroke pub I was chatting with some of the dealers & runners & I mentioned having bought something at Bermondsey the day before. What did you get, asked one of them, & I mentioned the little jug & basin set. He knew what I meant as he'd also been there & had considered buying them himself, & complimented me on what a good buy I'd made - "You've got a good eye". So, when I look at them, it brings back a nice memory of a very enjoyable day. I'd love to go back there some time, but for a variety of reasons, overseas travel is off the agenda indefinitely.
Anyway, the basin measures 5 cm tall, 7.5 across the top, & 5.5 cm across the base. The jug is 8.5 cm tall, 3.5 across the top, & 4 cm across the base. When I bought them I didn't know who made them , just that I liked them a lot! I display them with the jug sitting inside the basin to save space.
As well as the glass, I love your tip on display, I've just copied it on my Welz jugs and sugar bowls. The shelf looks altogether better, less cluttered :)
Thanks so much sklo42, & I'm so glad to have been able to provide a useful tip as well!
BEAUTIFUL Welz!!

Many thanks Scott!
What a great story! And what a nice remembrance of your trip, too! It is amazing to me how much Welz there is in the UK. I was in Warwick about 2 1/2 years ago, and there on the main street, in an antique shop's window, were at least six examples of some very pretty Welz - inside, even more. I bought a pretty pair of candle sticks to remember the visit, and sent the pictures I took of the other pieces to Craig. :)
Thanks, Michelle! I have stories for quite a few of my items & enjoy sharing them. It does make them more special! We seem to have a fair bit of Welz in Australia, too.
You have beautiful taste IronLace!
