This well used example of Wedgwood's Rosso Antico dates to the Georgian era, probably the late 18th century, based upon the only marking being simply the early style "WEDGWOOD". It features black designs upon a terra cotta body and is a fine exemplar of the Etruscan Revival movement in art. In addition to the rococo swirls, feathers and rosettes, there is a Medusa head adorning each end. It is about 12" long by 3" wide. It saw a very active life as a working object and bears a few small chips that it picked up along the way. If one examines it closely, how it was used becomes readily evident, so let's play a game and declare whomever comes up with the correct answer first becomes the winner of 100 days of good karma!

It is not glazed inside so that puts quite a few ideas to rest including a 'bourdaloo'.
    14. beyemvey beyemvey, 8 years ago
Correct Kevin, not a chamber pot and far too small. :-)

    26. beyemvey beyemvey, 8 years ago
LOL Sean :-) Just a little more suspense ;-P
    27. beyemvey beyemvey, 8 years ago
Since the suspense is getting to some of my friends... drumrollllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll... It was used as a tray to hold quill pens as evident by the large quantities of iron gall ink on the inside of the tray and quite a few spatters here and there on the outside. I can almost picture Bob Cratchit resting his pen in such a tray. (Had Scrooge & Marley not been too cheap to provide one LOL) Thanks to everybody who played, and even those who didn't... good karma to all! - Cheers!!! - Bob
