This well used example of Wedgwood's Rosso Antico dates to the Georgian era, probably the late 18th century, based upon the only marking being simply the early style "WEDGWOOD". It features black designs upon a terra cotta body and is a fine exemplar of the Etruscan Revival movement in art. In addition to the rococo swirls, feathers and rosettes, there is a Medusa head adorning each end. It is about 12" long by 3" wide. It saw a very active life as a working object and bears a few small chips that it picked up along the way. If one examines it closely, how it was used becomes readily evident, so let's play a game and declare whomever comes up with the correct answer first becomes the winner of 100 days of good karma!
Appreciate the loves Mrstyndall, PhilDMorris, & aura!
Any guesses yet RE: use?
Thanks again ho2cultcha!
Game hint - look inside the dish - Photo4.
:-) Sean :-)
its a planter !!
Good guess Sean but that was not its use, though I suppose one could plant something in it. No winner yet :-)
cooking / serving? great piece!
It's a super piece. Is it used for warming something?
Good try Hunter but that isn't it. :-)
No Adele, not for warming or cooking :-)
Another hint... we don't really need these today.
It is not glazed inside so that puts quite a few ideas to rest including a 'bourdaloo'.
Correct Kevin, not a chamber pot and far too small. :-)
I'm still watching this !!!
OK Kevin, if nobody gets it by this afternoon, I will reveal all!!! ;-P
Thanks to fortapache, LovelyPat, PostCardCollector, racer4four, kerry10456, AdeleC, jscott0363, vetraio50, & Caperkid!
A wild guess... A Georgian Barbie's bath tub??? ;-)
A storage/container for new candles, to replace the burned one on your chamber stick?
Best guess so far kyratango... but... nope! (LOL)
As best guess so far, could I get 3 days of good karma? I'm in need of some...
Everybody who plays is automatically entitled to a full month of good karma... sadle, my karma ran over my dogma :-)
so what is it used for ?
Sean, I will reveal this afternoon (Eastern Time USA) if nobody guesses before then :-)
Here's another hint... think MIGHTY hard.
ill be at work darn it all.
LOL Sean :-) Just a little more suspense ;-P
Since the suspense is getting to some of my friends... drumrollllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll... It was used as a tray to hold quill pens as evident by the large quantities of iron gall ink on the inside of the tray and quite a few spatters here and there on the outside. I can almost picture Bob Cratchit resting his pen in such a tray. (Had Scrooge & Marley not been too cheap to provide one LOL) Thanks to everybody who played, and even those who didn't... good karma to all! - Cheers!!! - Bob
Good karma for officialfuel too ;-P
Kevin/Vetraio... what do you th-INK?
I'm still scratching my head, mind you it is 7.40 am here.
So pens it was !!!!
Anything Rosso Antico is amazing. This really is Great !!!!
