... though I am certainly bottom feeding with my jokes!

I wanted to post this not because it is rare or exotic, but because it is fun. One need not necessarily spend a fortune to collect fun stuff, and this whimsical Koi vase by Royal Copley is an excellent example of this fact.

It is about 9" tall by 4" in diameter and dates to the mid-century era. It is marked "Royal Copley" deep under the glaze (photo 3). I think it is hilarious that the company has "Royal" in their name, since Royal Copley was a trademark of the Spaulding China Company in Sebring, Ohio. I guess they wanted some of the panache held by names such as Royal Doulton. They were known for producing figural items with a lot of kitsch between 1942 & 1957 when they went out of business. Some of their fun pieces such as this live on today, and can be collected without breaking the wallet.

The Copley and Royal Copley pottery products, I feel, are under-rated and overlooked. They had a huge catalog with something that could appeal to any taste. The Royal in the name was used on items designed by Royal Hickman.

I see, so Royal was a proper name! Thanks for clearing that up artfoot :-)

Sorry - it appears I have been misleading. Royal Hickman had nothing to do with Royal Copley. Royal Copley was simply a trade name used by Spaulding China Co. Same company also used the name Royal Windsor.
