This conical ring vase was made c.1885 by the Smith Bros. for the Mt. Washington Glass Company of New Bedford, Massachusetts. This vase shape was often used by the Smith Bros. in their work, but it is quite unusual to find one decorated in this style. It features a beautifully enameled scene of a Japanese crane with a dragonfly and Prunus blossoms in the Japonisme style, highlighted with gold gilt accents.

For those not familiar with the term Japonisme, it is was first used in France in 1872, and refers to "the influence of Japanese art, fashion and aesthetics on Western culture. The term is used particularly to refer to Japanese influence on European art, especially in impressionism."

The vase measures 8.25” tall x 4.5” at its widest diameter. The beautiful gray opaline glass is unusual to find in their work, but I think it harmonizes well with the lovely enameling.

It's lovely to see something different. The décor is quite unexpected for its period, but very appealing.

Thank you very much, sklo. I am glad you like it! Most of the vases in this shape done by the Smith Bros. have birds (quite a few cranes) or children done in more typical Victorian style enamel work, but this one really stands out. It was actually being sold as Japanese, and I can see why, to some degree.
