This is a quarter plate ambrotype of an African American nanny with children.
The ambrotype format dates from the Civil War era or earlier, so this certainly could depict a slave.
The ambrotype has surface scratching and scuffs, but the faces are crisp and clear.
Ambrotypes and daguerreotypes of African Americans are highly prized among collectors.

Great photo. The nanny looks barely a child herself.
Agree racer, the African American girl looks to be a pre-teen.

What a lovely piece!
Thanks again courtenay. Original Civil War and earlier African American images are few and far between!

Wow, the babysitter almost doesn't look old enough to handle that job, right? Even with the err's it's still a great photo!
Thanks passion-- I hate the damage, but it is still a strong and moving image.
