Hello everyone.
This piece is my first ebay buy for the year which arrived today.
I must admit I was a bit nervous while I was unwrapping the package as the seller's pictures were not the best and the description was minimal. Does everyone get that "have I done the right thing" and "is it what I hope it is" feeling with some purchases?
I paid under $200.00 for this brooch and I think it is really beautiful. It is not hallmarked for gold but I do feel confident that it is gold.....research would suggest that it is probably 15ct gold and Australian or British made.
I am calling it Edwardian Period because of the hinge as well as the crescent shape, which was very popular in that time frame.
This brooch measures 2 inches across tip to tip.
The opals are really pretty, there are 15 graduating in total. I need a bit of help here please.......as I am not sure if they are all the same variety or they are a mixed lot. They are all open backed and I hope you can see that in the pictures.
Anyway, I think I have done ok with this one, I love it and hope you do too. Thanks, Judy
It's beautiful, Judy! I think you did well with the price. Not uncommon for Edwardian jewelry to be unmarked, but let a jeweler examine it - there might be tiny marks somewhere. :-)))
Wow
That's amazing :-)
Thanks Bonnie, glad you like it and yes, I will have to take it into town and get it checked.......
Have you heard if anyone is having trouble getting emails from cw??? I haven't had any for 2 days so checked on comments that I knew I would get replies to and I did have replies.....but the emails did not come through.......
Thanks very much Zilla for the "wow".......that's what I thought when I first saw it too lol!!! :-)
Judy, I think you did really well!
Yes, I know well the feeling of "is it what I think it is" ;-D
Paul will certainly know what opal mine it is!

Such a beautiful brooch Judy!! I remember reading about the different types of Australian opals when I was living in Australia. I wanted to go mining for them:))
Thanks Roddy, it is isn't it!!! Funny how tastes change, a few years ago I would not have given opals a second glance! But now well I just love them!! Still can't tell them apart....but that's ok lol!
You will have to come back to Aus and have a little go at opal mining......put that on your bucket list!!
Appreciate the love too, thanks!
Thanks very much for the love Gillian, very much appreciated!!
My son was born in Australia Judy. I'm seriously considering returning there to settle down for good especially with my grandson less then 2 weeks from being born. Maybe I will get an opportunity to finally have a go at opal mining:)
How great Roddy!! Which state is your son in? Come for a good holiday visit at least anyway!
Hi Judy. My son lives in West Australia about an hour North of Perth. I'm hoping to make it a one way trip as I have to get my 2 chihuahuas quarintined. It won't be easy for them:(
Hi Roddy, it will be a big move for you and your puppies!! I can't even begin to imagine how much planning and organising you would have to do for such a move. We are in the process of just moving from one part of Tasmania to another area here and that is stressful enough!!!
I am sure it will be wonderful for you to be near your son and of course the new grandson too! I haven't been to WA, but I have several cousins over that way who love it!
I have been corresponding with some Aussie companies who will take care of everything in handling my chi's Judy. A couple appear to be very professional and I have a good feeling about dealing with them in reducing the stress level in such a long journey and isolation.
My son loves WA and what I remember from my time spent there it was more enjoyable then NSWales.
I want this to be my last move, will be great to be close to my son/grandson and his family.
That's great Roddy, very happy for you! :-))
