Growing up in the 1960's was when I first began reading Tarzan books, comics and Sunday newspaper comic strips written by Edgar Rice Burroughs. This was also the time of waiting to see Tarzan on the big screen very exciting for a young boy entering the fantastic world Mr. Burroughs had created including John Carter of Mars, The Mucker, and many more facinaiting characters and worlds this great author created. To this day I still keep an eye out for Tarzan memorabilia.
Irwin Porges as a boy read every book by Edgar Rice Burroughs so it is a natural fit that in his later years he would write the biography of his idol.

The book pictured here was written in 1975 by Irwin Porges and is a first edition with 820 pages covering the history of the life and works of Mr. Burroughs.

A small history of Edgar Rice Burroughs and Irwin Porges: Wikipi

Edgar Rice Burroughs (September 1, 1875 – March 19, 1950) was an American writer best known for his creations of the jungle hero Tarzan and the heroic Mars adventurer John Carter, although he produced works in many genres. He is credited with writing over 80 novels.

Arthur Porges (20 August 1915 – 12 May 2006) was an American author of numerous short stories, most notably during the 1950s and 1960s, though he continued to write and publish stories until his death.

    TARZAN

"Tarzan of the Apes" appeared in the October 1912 issue of All-Story magazine. Burroughs received 700 dollars for the tale.
The first Tarzan movie appeared in 1918, with Elmo Lincoln in the title role, which only helped to make Tarzan and Burroughs even more popular.
The year 1932 was ushered in with a scream, as MGM released the first sound Tarzan movie, "Tarzan the Ape Man" with the now legendary Johnny Weissmuller.

The works of Edgar Rice Burroughs will endure as classic tales of adventure, romance and wonder. Tarzan remains one of the best-known literary characters in the entire world.

      Roddy,
This is really great! I remember, as a kid, when Tarzan would come on television nearly every Saturday afternoon and I looked forward to those great old movies, especially the ones with Johnny Weissmuller!!

This is brilliant. I have always been a fan of The land that time forgot and other similar works so well done toddy.

I had almost all the books and read many of the other Edgar Rice Burroughs titles. They still can't get movies to match the books. I think Ron Ely was one that was the closest. Johnny Weissmuller movies were the best even if they didn't quite match the books.

      Hi Scotty,
The great old movies and tv series starring Ron Ely, Cheeta, and Jai. There was lots of action. Ron Ely did all of his own stunts. A different time when actors had more freedom. And Johnny Weissmuller was my favorite love his part as Tarzan!!

Thank you so much for your great comment Wandlessfairy. The Land that Time Forgot was first written during WW1 and fit the story line perfect. What I like about Edgar Rice Burroughs is that he could pick a topic be it space related, cave man, western and others and add his special talent creating such great novels that people who only liked science fiction or Tarzan, etc. would read one of ERB's westerns or something else he wrote and enjoy the story. He was a remarkable gifted writer.

I still have a few of the ERB books fortapache. Ron Ely is the Tarzan I remember the most as he was the star in the 1960's. I'm sure I watched every episode. The books were well written Hollywood seemed to fall a bit short on the big screen still good movies though. Great movies with Johnny Weissmuller.

Oops Roddy not toddy. Sorry for the spelling mistake, blame the Mexican sunshine. Over here to get away from the cold. Expected to see you by the pool ha ha. Am a big sci fi fan so loved ERB's talent at turning his writing talent to so many different genres. Ron Ely was my era too.
