Post War CDV of Valentine LaPoint, who was a surviving
veteran of the 81st New York Regiment until his death in
1913. See the tintype of him listed this morning.
His GAR badge is on his chest. He lost a leg to amputation at
the 1864 battle of Cold Harbor, but got an artificial leg,
and lived, and worked until the day before his death in 1913.

A salute to a War Hero!! Very courageous to go on and work til the end. Think of all the sloths laying on couches watching porn, or with fingers frozen to their keyboard playing games,( in their own selfish world while someone waits on them!)! and they are able-bodied- Contrast to this man pictured, giving his all to his country in War and then working and being productive afterwards. The "Fall Of Rome" began within their gates.

      Thanks, PCC.
I feel just as you do about this American hero. His obituary says
that when he finally passed away there were still two or more
enemy bullets in what remained of his legs. He must have been
      full of courage!

He's still handsome and looks calm and not unhappy. Some people deal with life well, and he sounds like such a special one.

There is a larger paper photo of him, seated on a crude wooden bench,
with his paper folded up next to him. He is older than this shot, and he
has a smile on his face. Somehow he has overcome the pain of his past.
His daughter kept all his old memory trove, and I guess this shows how she felt
      about him.
