Civil War era carte de visite of Lieutenant Melvin C. Wadsworth. He is pictured wearing a frock coat and was photographed by Variell of Gardiner, Maine. Wadsworth's hometown of Pittston is about 1.5 miles from Gardiner.
CDV has a period inscription on the back: "Regards of, M.C. Wadsworth, Lt. 16th Me Vols".
He is a DOCUMENTED POW during the Battle of Gettysburg.
The 16th Maine has an amazing battle record. At Gettysburg, it went into battle 275 strong. It lost 11 KIA, 62 WIA and 159 POW and played a pivotal role in the fight of 1 JUL, buying time for other forces to withdraw and regroup.
Wadsworth was among those 159 taken prisoner. He was held in Macon, GA and Columbia, SC.
According to HDS he survived the war and was mustered out of the Regiment on 5 JUN 1865.
The Maine Historical society has a similar image of Wadsworth online.
