This frame is about 4.5 inches square. it belonged to my great grandparents and the photo and story inside is about an ancestor of mine who owned a fishing/hunting lodge on a lake in Quebec. i think that the frame is really beautiful. i'd never seen such a large one before. the story is interesting too, but in old-style french, so i can't read it very well.

That is a big bit of gutta percha, and beautifully made. The photos are a big bonus.

These are actually made out of an early composite material called thermoplastic and not gutta percha (a tree sap).
They are often called Union cases (a "union" of materials used to make them).

It is a common mistake-- similar to the notion that every antique cased image is a daguerreotype or tintype.
