This tool is smaller than it looks in pictures. Maybe 8 inches long and fairly thin. It was sold to me as a leather working tool but I can't figure out its purpose. When you depress the wooden handle the brass spike protrudes from the bottom. There is a clip on the back which you can use to adjust the depth of penetration. The only writing is a 1886 patent date.
Any help identifying this tool and what it's used for would be greatly appreciated. Leather working is my new hobby and I like getting it done with old tools.
This is a rug hooking tool. As you discovered, you can adjust the depth of penetration which yields the length of the loop on the top side of the rug. After you have pushed as many loops through the backing fabric as you want you coat the bottom side (which is relatively flat at this point) with a rubber glue and apply a layer of coarse fabric. Bind the edges and you have a rug.
Thank you so much! I'd be disappointed in the purchase but for 5 bucks I might just try to make a rug. The gentleman also sold me a multi tool awl that, while it works great for leather, may have been for rug making or upholstery.
