This sampler belonged to my mother. I don’t know where she got it or who made it, but I have always loved the frame. There are many similar frames on the internet. It’s an Adirondack walnut wood frame. The corners have hand carved leaves and the sides look like tree bark. Based on my research, this could also be considered tramp art.
I decided to do some spring cleaning on the frame. When I took off the back so I could clean both sides of the glass, I discovered that the artist attached his/her work to a piece of cardboard. The piece that was used was from the Embossing Co. Apparently this company was established in 1870 and made toys. Their motto was “Toys That Teach’” and they made dominos, wooden blocks, design blocks, and other toys. I’m guessing the artist cut a piece from a toy box and attached the piece to it. You can find many of these vintage toys on Ebay.
I don’t know what’s more interesting--the sampler, the frame, or the piece of cardboard!
all three are interesting,I especially love the frame and the sampler is just darling
Thanks, Dottie!
I agree with Dottie, I love the frame, but to have the whole package is a real darling :)
