Old Cast Iron String/Yarn Holder ????

So a friend of a friend was moving and trying to sell some items and I saw this piece of old cast iron and thought it was really cool but I had no idea what it's intended use was and neither did they. They just said that they had acquired it a very long time ago from an elderly gentleman. The only thing I have been able to find that is similar in any way is a string holder but I think it is to large to be one. It is 18" high and 13 1/2" wide including the handles. The top of the round cage is hinged and the opening is 8 1/2" wide, and the pedestal base is 6 1/2" wide. The cage looks to be about the right size to hold a gazing ball. If anyone has any idea what this was used for I would greatly appreciate any and all input ! Thanks !!
