A few days ago, I was fortunate to discover a painting that is the works of the infamous ALVIN CARL HOLLINGSWORTH. The painting, measuring 18 x 24 inches (24 × 30 inches framed), circa 1960's is of presumably acrylic on paper.
ALVIN CARL HOLLINGSWORTH
A Black American, born 1938 in New York City's Harlem community, he is considered among the first African American comic book artist.
He begun illustrating for CRIME COMICS in 1941, books can confirm comic book works is a signed four-page WAR COMICS STORY ROBOT PLANE IN AVIATION PRESS, CONTACT COMICS #5 (DATED 1945).
He went on to work on CAPTAIN NERO COMIC, FICTION HOUSE (WINGS 1946 - 1950 COMICS), AVON COMICS, FU MANCHU, MASTER COMICS, FOX COMICS, FAWCETT COMICS and NEGRO ROMANCE 1980, just to name a few.
He taught illustrations at the HIGH SCHOOL OF ART AND DESIGNS.
Hollingsworth thereafter left his comics for a fine arts painting from 1960 until 1988.
He taught art at HOSTOS COMMUNITY COLLEGE OF CUNY.
He work as an authority on fluorescent paints and work on both representational and abstract art.
In the summer of 1963, he and fellow artists ROMANE BEARDEN and WILLIAM MAJORS formed a group spiral in order to help the civil rights movement through art exhibitions.
