The blade in its brass frame is pulled out of the handle, the blade opened out and then reinserted into the wooden handle where it is held by a spring clip. In the open position the knife is 8.5 inches long. The brass part is stamped S.F.C. Eskilstuna, Sweden. Any idea what age this knife might be?
This is called a "barrel knife." They were made from about mid-19th C to about mid-20th C. It is a traditional knife of Sweden but they are made in other countries. Eskilstuna has been a cutlery center in Sweden for centuries. I have no idea who S.F.C. is but he/it is not on any list I have of knife makers known to have made barrel knives.
bobby725 - They make a cheap plastic advertising knife today with the same mechanism as your barrel knife. Just goes to show that there's nothing new under the sun.
Thanks for the comments. I always liked the mechanism of this knife. Picked it up in a local antique shop about 25 years ago.
