Bought this 8 seater dining table in 2002 from an antique shop who were advertising it as rosewood. Can anyone confirm if it is an antique and whether it is rosewood or teak ? I removed the elephants ears as they get in the way when you have 8 chairs in place, they were attached using screws which is why I question it being antique.

From the pictures which old eyes can't bring close enough; I would say the side trim and legs are probably Bolivian rosewood. The pictures are dark and the grain of the wood doesn't show well. As for Teak, the proper is light colored similar to cheap Teak but I question whether or not it is actually Teak. Teak is one of only two woods in the world that can repel water by virtue of it's natural oils. This wood doesn't appear to be close enough grained to be Teak. Again I can't see the pictures close enough.
By the 20th century rosewood fell out of favour for carving. Rosewood is more of a red wood. This looks almost like walnut to me but not sure on that. I have seen many tables carved of walnut esp on the top. Whatever, it is a gorgeous carved table with the prerequisite glass top. Beautiful !
PhilDMorris; I have to disagree on your comment. Rosewood when turned or carved is a dark brown, I still have some in the shop along with walnut I bought from Ethan Allen furniture when they were selling cut offs. The wood I see here is either Rosewood or possibly Cocobolo. Both woods were inexpensive until about 8 or 10 years ago when they stopped cutting in the rain forests.
No disrespect intended just my point of view from what I see.
Did you not read fhj2, I said I was not sure, just offering my comment, I am not sure on this country's type of rosewood used.
