These all came from the once family of Pvt. Valentine LaPoint,
once in the 81st NY regiment. He was badly wounded in
the 1864 battle of Cold Harbor, in Virginia. One lower leg was amputated, but he was in time given an artificial leg, and he
married and fathered one child, and worked until the day before
his sudden death in 1913.
A survivor.
On the lower left of the display, there is a Gettysburg badge which
pictures, Gen. Meade, and also Gen. Lee, and this came out in
1913. Val died in 1913, so this must have been one of the last
items purchased in his collection.
Note on the old 81st NYV badges, the image of the 18th corps,
which the 81st was a member of.
Don't know how I could have missed this what a great collection!
Thank you, and the best thing is that I am told that regimental badges from
this unit are seldom seen.
And never so many in one collection in such great condition, a real keeper.
