Found while metal detecting. Any idea what it was used for? Appears to me to be a latch of some kind.
Thanks

Don't really know what it's called but isn't it just a swivel wall hook for clothes? To be used behind a door or on the back of a door, e.g. Like this one: http://www.toplicht.de/en/popups/zoom/c2hvcC5kb21haW4uUHJvZHVjdDo0MTg3;jsessionid=F79EF0DA62217BFDD54899BED6309787
There is not enough clearance to be a hook. This was found at a site of late 1700's early 1800's history. Most finds at this location were musket balls along with one piece cuff button, tack and barbed wire of that period. Nothing modern, other than a few stray bullets, was found here. This is the only thing I could not identify. Someone suggested it is a piece from a driving saddle.
Thanks
The barbed wire at this location was dated to late 1800's.)
I agree, no clearance really. I think you're on to something there, probably a rein or belt strap would go round the straight part. Some horse equipment, saddle or maybe something on wagon... Interesting. Good luck.
Thank you OlofZ.
My vote, is part of a harness, millions of them were used for hundreds of years. the leather is gone but some metal is still here, thanks Pete
I agree that it's probably some kind of harness or driving gear but please remember that the age of the site doesn't always correlate to the age of every object found there. I have seen dozens of pocket knives alleged to be from the Civil War because they were "excavated on a battlefield," that were obviously 20th century knives.
