I found this at a yard sale in Walla Walla, WA. There is a company name on the end of the tape, but it is frayed, so I could only read Rule Company. Someone said it might be used to measure carpet, but I don't know.

I am wondering what this tape measure was used for or what company made it.

My dad had a cloth one similar to this years ago. His was used for land surveying. I forget the exact reason for using cloth but seem to think it was because it could be tensioned to take the sag out as opposed to using a metal tape. That was long ago and my memory seems not as good as it once was.

Thank you, fhrjr2, for the information!

As a side note, I have a 165 foot cloth tape also used for land measurement. I bought it after telling the city I would do my own plot map for an out building. It was part of the requirements to be issued a permit. I never actually thought about it until I saw this post.

I bet it was used for surveying. I was told by someone it might be used to measure carpet, so I think it probably could be used for either or both. It's fun to find unusual things and to learn about them. I also found a logging ruler. It is not flat, but long like a yard stick, but not square around. It has angles and is thick. Apparently it is used to calculate the height of a tree by measuring around the trunk.
