I have collected books and cards illustrated by twins Janet and Anne Grahame Johnstone for many years. I have most of their books and there are not many items to collect any more, but this original illustration popped up on ebay yesterday, so I snapped it up quick and it arrived today! It is from a book published in 1968 by Purnell called "Jason and the Golden Fleece" by Roger Lancelyn Green, and illustrated by the twins, and is an illustration of Hylas and the nymphs. I will get it framed and hung up on my wall.

I find the phenomenon of identical twins as artists a really fascinating phenomenon. I have a set of paintings by the Davidson twins who also were book illustrators. The ability to finish each other's sentences is something I know with my partner but to finish off an art idea together is another aspect of twinism. This painting of yours seems to investigate the idea perfectly.

"Like her sister, Janet, Anne Grahame-Johnstone never married, but enjoyed close relations with her nephew and two nieces, all of whom work in the arts. Her legacy to children everywhere includes work on Andy Pandy and the Flower Pot Men in early children's television, and numbers of Christmas jigsaw puzzle designs. But she and Janet will chiefly be remembered for their huge output of illustrations stretching from Peter Pan to Gilbert and Sullivan, always executed to a high professional standard and at best, in the line drawings, able to compete with some of the finest work of their generation.

      Nicholas Tucker.

Anne Grahame Johnstone, illustrator: born London 1 June 1928; died Badingham, Suffolk 25 May 1998."
