Engraved map of the Holy Land and Egypt, fully colored by a contemporary hand. A cartouche in the upper left corner includes a description of the region. The title cartouche with mileage scale below it is in the lower right corner. Five ships and a sea monster are depicted in the ocean. Latin text on verso.
Beautifully colored example of Ortelius' map of the Holy Land from Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, the first modern atlas. Ortelius famous map is based on Tilemann Stoltz's map, published in 1566. Laor 540B; Nebenzahl 30.
Crease mark at the 65 on top and 65 on bottom.
Purchased recently at a Goodwill in Houston.
Measures 23 3/4" wide by 18 3/4" high within the frame
Antique wood frame.
