Hi, everybody
I found this old jar, and thought it was interesting, and quite lovely.. I have a lot of questions about it, and I hope some of you can help.
Does anyone know ..
What it is, i.e., what it might have been used for?
What the is process of how the gold leaf (I assume it's gold leaf) was applied and etched, called?
The lid looks to be brass, but what is the top of the lid made of?
Is it covered with a textured gold foil that is under the glass?
It measures about 2-1/4 inches across the lid, and stands about 2 inches high.
Pretty piece-Possibly a vanity/dresser jar.
Very iteresting. The lid loo9ks like it is GUILLOCHÉ ENAMEL.
Is the surround STERLING ???
Are there any silver marks?
Under the lid.
The iridescent glass is equally interesting.
I think it is a vanity jar too (cold creme?).
The surround is indeed Sterling, which is stamped on the surround, along with possibly a British hallmark, and the numbers "7955," and then a zero, or a "C."
And it does look like Guilloché, doesn't it?
The inside of the lid is most-likely brass.
The piece is really stunning.
