i'd love to get some more info about this piece. it's part of an old desk set and probably has something to do with ink, or stamps or something. ??? any info appreciated!

Yes stamps in both wells, single stamps or perhaps a small roll of stamps........not sure on that!

Don't think stamps would have left dark stains in the wells. Not sure that this is for ink per se but perhaps something that used ink. It's very handsome! :)
I would have thought ink wells. ??? It's really nice. Love the design and fact that it's brass!
it's definitely for stamps. if you google image 'gilded bronze stamp box', you'll see lots of them. or just look up tiffany stamp box and you'll see them.
