I got this today. It was being sold by a man who had bought out an estate. He had it listed as a washstand. It looks like it is an older piece, but not sure exactly how old. It is in good condition overall and I did not notice any marking on back. He thought it made out of tiger maple. Any ideas?
It is 29 inches wide and 25 inches tall
Thanks for all the loves
At 25 inches I would go with his suggestion of being a wash stand. Definitely not maple, looks like Ash to me.
Fhrjr2, thanks so much for the info-any ideas about age?
I may get long winded here for a moment. To begin with someone will tell you this is oak, which it is not. Oak and ash have a similar appearance but Ash is more open grained and is actually harder than Oak.
During the war years the government stopped furniture makers from buying certain metal and also Oak and other more exotic hardwoods. Next best choice for furniture was Ash. Believe it or not a piece made from Ash brings way more than a similar piece in Oak. The reason is the era and the restrictions. While Ash is harder it is more subject to rot and decay over time where Oak will resist that. So the actual piece is fairly old....my age or a bit more.
Now to burst your bubble. The hardware is fake replacement stuff. You don't show construction details of the drawers or the back side. Any piece is only as old as the newest part. The base unit is old from the looks and in good shape. Probably in better shape than me.
Fhrjr2, I appreciate you responding back so quickly and for your knowledge on this. I just love this and put it in my dining room.
Thanks for all the loves
