My most recent acquisition - I spotted these in the local antique shop display case a couple days ago. "I just put those in there" the dealer told me when I asked to see them. I smiled, didn't question the price, and just said "I'll take 'em".

So, what did I come home with? A pair of red, yellow, and white spatter cased in clear glass bud vases with cobalt blue flame-like flower-arranger (or bride's basket) type tops. If that weren't enough, both vases have labels. The undersides are not marked and (somewhat surprisingly to me) have a ground pontil mark. They are both about 9" (22.8 cm) tall.

Two pieces of evidence make me think that these were produced by Welz. First, the label (picture 4) is the same shape as the "FWK" label, and though there has been some contention about this label, it seems to occur mostly on Welz items. Second, the shape seems closely related to a bud vase (pic 3) that I have previously posted in a confirmed Welz decor. I don't suppose either one, or both, of these features confirm it, but they lead me to believe these are most likely Franz Welz products.

I do not know if these are Welz or not. It is my opinion that simple spatters such as this, using extremely common color palettes, can be highly unreliable as far as their use to identify production. I would want to see this shape in a decor which can be solidly linked to Welz before I committed to these also being their production.

Although not common, Welz production with pontil marks do exhist. Most of their baskets as an example, are produced with ground pontils. Some vases are also found that way, and we will likely never know why that is.

My only comment would be that the "label" about which there has been some "contention" in this forum only, is the "Royal Art Glass label".

The FWK label has never been questioned, at least that I am aware of. This label and the FWK label are the same shape. This label is also commonly found on known Welz production, although it is not used by me at least, to attribute glass to them.

The "Royal Art Glass" label is similar, but a slightly different shape.

      Hope that helps..
