This is a vintage Newman Decor airbrushed watercolor painting. The artist signature is Roche. I present this for 2 reasons: 1) It is truly beautiful as is. Realize that the painting is quite large - 34" x 29" without the frame and 41" x 35" including the frame which I don't believe to be the original but when it looks this good reframed, who cares! The artwork itself is quite appealing with the island girl holding a cockatoo in front of a very well-painted grey leaved tree with pink flowers on a pale green background. The colors really set off the beauty of this painting.
2) The artist signature of Roche in the lower left has given me a hard time trying to find a history of and more works by him/her. Roche was one of a stable of artists who supplied original watercolors, usually in pairs, to Newman Decor, (as image #4 shows), a high end interior design firm that decorated apartments during the late 1940s housing boom. The original art work would complement the fabric selected as coverings or, as in this case, the overall mood of the decorations. Any info about Roche or more specific info on Newman Decor will be greatly appreciated.
