This heavy hammer head looking object is about 5" long and appears to be made of copper. It has a square hole through the center that is large on one side and smaller on the other. The lines appear to be decorative. There are small round indents on each end. I don't think it is an old hammer though. Any one know what this could be?

I believe you will find it is brass, not copper and while the end photo is dark, I would say it is a tack hammer. Head of the tack fit in the hole on the end and you hit the other end to drive the tack.

I think this is too massive to be a tack hammer and the square hole too small for a handle. I believe it is a valve handle. They often have tapered square shafts onto which this handle would fit (it's still a big one).

Thank you for the input. Very helpful. There is no wear on the ends and the only place of wear is near the square hole on the side with the larger opening.
