in the 1950's, a toy company named Baby Barry decided horrifying little children with this scary doll was a wonderful idea. My husband's Emmett Kelly doll has frightened and haunted our children without fail for decades as it can be occasionally placed where least expected.
I do appreciate this doll and Emmett Kelly but have Clown Anxiety. Saving him has been a funny effort.
I've always disliked dolls and clowns, so this is an especial dislike! LOL. It's a neat item, though. Great toy for Halloween.
Loved this post!! I can't quite love the doll, although he has a certain charm :)
Hi Alice, your Emmitt is pretty unique and as all Emmitt Kelly collectibles should be respected in high regard. Thats terrible you have an anxiety and the kids have been targets of torture. I admit it is kinda funny, your ol' man must be a real jokester, and I mean that in fun, no disrespect. Clown's and their true nature have been getting a bad rap since the movie 'It', Insane Clown Possie, etc. and poor examples of clown's like your Emmitt and the introduction of ceramic head collectible clowns.
Your Emmitt just needs his make up touched up and his hat, totally different appearance, I would really hope at least. I entered my Emmitt's in show and tell a little bit ago and was looking back through the category and noticed your picture. A girlfriend of mine had her 15 year old son over here about 5 years ago, good kid. He saw my case with my clown collection inside as we walked him through the house, showing him around. He pointed out the three clowns in the back, my two Emmitt's and Mae the Clown, and said, "those three are ok, but all the others are bad!" I was very impressed with his comment and taste, pretty sure he had not a clue to Emmitt Kelly, but it was concerning his distaste to the others.
I have close to one hundred clocks displayed in my dining room, 90% travel & alarm clocks. This 15 year old kid is the first person that has ever said they all say 5 o'clock, his mother had been here a number of times, friends for 10 years and she was shocked, she had never noticed the times were all the same. Numerous other friends have been through that room but nobody ever mentioned the time? It's 5 o'clock somewhere right, one of my favorite Allen Jackson tunes, it's always 5 o'clock in my dining room and Bradon was the first person to ever mention it, don't think he had a clue to the Alan Jackson tune either, but at least he picked up on the time. That's just an added tidbit to help establish the keen sense of the young mans attention to detail. Thanks for your time and if you get a second check out my Emmitt's in show and tell.
yours truly,
Danny
