    This thing takes square shank bits and when you pump it the bit goes one way on the up stroke and the opposite on the down stroke. Makes me think it is for spoon bits.
    There are no marks on it anywhere so I don;t know who made it but it is clearly factory made.
    I just want to know what it is and how old it might be.

      You are correct. It's called a "push drill" or I have heard them called "pump" drills. They require reversible bits like spoon bits.

      Thanks for the comment Uncle Ron,. Do you have any idea how old it might be? It was my wife's Grandfathers and he was born in 1888 but when he got it we will never know.

      no marks of any kind. Hard to believe because it is clearly a factory product.
