    I'm not sure if the signature is in Chinese or Japanese, but i really LOVE the design on this box. it's 3.75 inches across and so perfect! not very old, but very nice!

      thanks nuts! i was able to solve it on a Japanese Decorative Arts forum on FB. it's a studio piece by a husband/wife team from Sebastopol. This thrown and carved covered box is by the husband and wife team at Nichibei Potters located in Sebastopol, CA. The husband is Mikio Matsumoto and his wife is Cheryl Costantini.
