I have been researching this brooch by Nettie Rosenstein and trying to figure out if the Marie Louise on the coin is a tribute to the Marie Louise Empress of France who was married to Napolean Bonaparte, or if there is another historical figure named Marie Louise who Nettie Rosenstein was referring to. This is a pretty big and heavy piece, very artistic and dimensional.
I'm guessing the previous owner attached the chain to use it as a necklace, especially since medallion and coin jewelry was so popular for a time.

The whole Napoleonic court, men as well as women, were mad for cameos, so would be quite appropriate to name a design after the empress. :)
