This is an old luggage shelf ( I think) from early 1900's passenger car. this comes from the railroad country of southern Illinois. This was found in my great grandma's garage, which great grandpa stored his greasde guns (gasp) layers and layers of grease, dirt, and oil covered this when we found it. It took me weeks to clean it. The only mark on it is "The Dayton Manufacting Co" Never have seen another item like this. I do realize in the pick that we may have it hanging upside down, but we find this most convenient fot storing items, and this thing is heavy! at lest 35-40 lbs of solid brass. Any info anyone has would be appreciated. Have no idea on the value of this. (The passenger cars used to be scrapped out). This is definitely staying in the family!!

Looks like a nice brass shelf, and early, by the ornate detail. Probably pre-1900. Don't think I've ever seen one so fancy!! Dayton was an old RR supplier. I don't think you have it upside down either. They needed that tall rim to keep thinks from sliding off as the car rocked around. Go back out in that garage and look for more neat stuff !!!
