These plates have been in my family for over 100 years, it is believed that they came from my great grandfather who was a glass and china merchant in Wales. The information that was passed down to me was that they were Della Robbia Pottery from Birkenhead, England. I do not believe they are as the clay is white not terracotta. There are some makes on the back not related to the firing but can not work out what they are. Sadly one of the plates has been broken before I inherited them. It happened long ago when a boy visited playing with a ball and bounced it in the lounge room and knocked it off the wall. Very sad.
They are beautiful!
I have no answer for you but I love these. Even the repaired one is good with me. Someone may be along soon to let you know!
Can you post a photo of the back marks?
Thanks for comments. I have included a couple of pics of the markings.
Unfortunately I have not seen that mark before. I hope someone will see these and solve the mystery. I just love these :)
Is that a signature on the fishes tail on broken plate?
Yes it looks like E P Para***. The last three letters are hard to work out the first could be an n or u maybe the next looks like and I and the last could be an o or d very hard to say.
Well, I can't find anything. Do you think the first plate could be Cleopatra with the snakes beside her and the second looks like a Greek goddess??
Waggy21, you are welcome! I hope someone can id these-sorry I couldn't help more :). Also, welcome to Collectors Weekly!
Many thanks Mrstyndall. I will posting again soon, I have a vase that dates back before 1857 with a very interesting story. Cheers
Can't wait to see it :)
Not what I always thought was DELLA ROBBIA but truly SPECTACULAR pieces both of them.
Could you get a clearer shot of that signature, please ????
I believe Della Robbia used terracotta these are white clay. I have uploaded another photo showing the signature. Cheers
Would love to know if anyone has any ideas of the region they might come from. Thanks for looking.
It’s been 4 years since I post this I would love to hear if anyone has any ideas of the origin of these plates. Thanks
