This is completely brass, about 3.5 inches across. Brought home from my uncles estate, Looks like could be used for horse or driving tack. Any ideas?

Used for locking a soldiers kitbag. Passed through the eyelet holes and only requires one padlock.
Kit bag ? duffel bag? are they still used? I will now use it in place of the draw string on mine. Thnks, patchas

I have a feeling that the lock is also designed to double as a handle when locked in position.
Yes, I imagine it could be used as a handle, Just wouldn't want to load too heavy as it is only brass. Thanks, patchas
It's a lynch pin. Now we just have to figure out what for. I'll leave that easy part to y'all.

Ralph , I have one Identical to this and it is a cycle lock
It is an older hitch pin. Google hitch pin and you will find dozens of designs for it. Use them in different sizes to hitch anything. I have four of them I use on my tractor attachments. Brass is pretty soft.
Fhr, known in times of old as a lynch pin that is on the outside of (wagon) axles to hold the wheel on. The pin goes thru the hole & the C swivels under axle so it doesn't bounce out. In this case, obviously it has been designed for a lock, such as Fuzzmugin is talking about. Hey, that sounded like I know what I'm talking about !
Blunderbuss2 there were some clever buggers in times long gone by, and there were some clever people who adapted what they made for different applications..
The one I have came of my fathers kit bag.
My larger one has a place for a padlock. I used that on the boat hitch. They are really handy for lots of different applications. Mine are newer than the one shown. That is a pretty old one.

Yeah, guess I am Fhr. I was lucky to have survived that charge at Gettysburg with Picket and have considered every year since as a bonus. LOL. Correction: Spelled linchpin. Guess I have had "lynch" on my mind ever since I was detained outside Ford's Theater one night.
Blunder , I wish I had known. I was working usher duty at Ford theater. Probably happened when my candle went out and I went to find my flint and steel. I could have escorted you in along with Mr. Booth.
