I recently bought these 2 ashtrays by William H Haseler. They are both marked for Birmingham and Y for the year 1898, WHH makers mark and a registers number.
There are the Jack of clubs, champagne and glass, dancing girl and a horse and rider all on an enamel tiles, I was wondering if the ashtrays are somehow related to gambling. There is slight enamel lost but considering age I think they are in pretty good condition.
I have somehow over time managed to buy serveral pieces by William H Haseler and this is a great addition to my collection.
    Many thanks for looking.

Card playing. People who played bridge, pinochle, canasta etc. at card tables always (usually) had their own ashtrays.

Hi Celiene, that's interesting I didn't realize that people used to bring there own ashtrays. Looking at these 2 ashtrays, I think it made prefect sense, thanks for you help.

      Hi Jean :-)
      Great find from W H H!

The enamels depict the famous (or infamous!) four vices!
      Usually encountered as cufflinks:
      https://www.google.fr/search?q=four+vices+cufflinks&rlz=1C1AOHY_frFR708FR709&espv=2&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwj7iv6nzp7TAhXHWxoKHdbjApIQsAQIIg&biw=1280&bih=709

And... No, you hadn't to bring your own ashtray (neither your own glass!).
What Celiene intended to say is the host placed individual ashtray for each player ;-))
