This was placed around the neck of a cow that would not respect fences and get out of it's pen. The device would catch on the wires of the fence and not let the cow stick it's head through between the wires. Cows could ruin fences and get onto your neighbors property if they stuck their heads thorough the fence and push. No harm or pain to the cow.

      Bit small for a cow?

Only a suggestion: Clamps around a telephone pole as steps for a linesman?
    4. patchas, 8 years ago
Maybe to keep a calf from nursing., wild guess.

As stated in the first response......had one on the Farm. To put around a CALF neck so they could not get through the fence.

      I am 500 % sure of this!!!

      They came in different sizes

      I stand corrected! :-)

I'd say Sparman solved this mystery and Antiquerose confirmed it.
Thanks for this tidbit of education, exactly why I love CW!

Thanks for the input !! I had a friend suggest it was for cows or goats but could not find definitive proof ! THANK YOU

Yours looks exactly like the one we had on the farm....Forget what we referred to it as in name of it.....but here is another similar one:

Maybe to keep telephone poles from wandering thru fences. LOL!

It's called a "poke". Traditional ones were made from a forked branch with a rod fixed between the sides of the "Y" to keep it on the animal. Never buy a "pig in a poke" because he will try to run away. :-)
