Here are three foot warmers in my collection. Two soapstone foot warmers and one British Ceramic Bottle warmers.
Photo #2 shows the larger of the soapstone warmer (size indicated by the sharpie felt pen in the photo) and photo#3 shows a smaller soapstone warmer. They were usually heated in the fireplace or on a pot bellied stove and if placed at the foot of the bed after heating, they kept your foot toasty warm through out the night.
Photo# 4 shows an English stoneware foot warmer. They were filled with boiling hot water and the heat transferred to the feet during the cold winter evening while reading a book or doing your sewing chores. They were also used in churches during the service. Churches were notoriously cold and the foot warmer gave creature comforts during your prayers. They sometimes were at your feet in the buggy going to church.
These British stoneware foot warmers were sometimes called "blind pigs", I'm not sure, maybe because some were shaped like pigs with no eyes. You tell me.
