These beads have the prettiest color blue and I'm assuming they are glass. I bought them in a thrift shop in the Southwest, I thought they were interesting because of the Chinese writing on them. They are hand knotted and the clasp is old. The strand is 15" long. My assumption is that they were either traded back in the day or belonged to someone working the railroad out west.

Would someone tell me who manufactured them? How can I test if they are glass or something else? Does anyone recognize the Chinese graphic? How do I clean them?

Wonderful Peking glass Shou (character) beads!

Shou character is auspicious for happiness, these beads were the rage around 1920, Chinese used them and exported a lot.

Wow, thank you! The Peking glass Shou beads look just like mine although they have been re-threaded and mine have not. I wonder what the difference in value is?
