What is it? I found this 5 1/4 inches long, S-shaped item in my father tool box. Dad passed away in the '90s at 85 years old. It is made of what appears to be white ceramic material. My nephew thinks it is a tool for rope splicing but all the fids I've seen are elongated conical shaped. Anyone know what it is and what its use is?

Hello, fids & marlinspikes etc. are usually straight for leverage reasons, I have very similar tools in carved hard stone for working gold leaf on leather, but I think unless the tips of your ceramic item are very smooth indeed, it is more likely to be for modelling work on clay, for potters sgraffito work and sculptures.
Hope this helps, Jonathan at Haze

Thank you for sharing your knowledge. The ends of this tool not particularly smooth, so it probably is for working clay.
