I have no clue. Any ideas? I just bought it today out of a box of old hardware. Just thought it was pretty, and I like the mark on the bottom. Hope someone can solve the mystery!

PhilDMorris, it is 7 inches at the base and 11 inches tall.
It looks older than 1981 to me. Since the date was obviously stamped separately, I wonder if it is really 1861 ?
I'm thinking the number probably does not signify the date. Just coincidental that it looks that way.
Brunswick, yuck, lol, I hope that isn't the case, but it may well be. I wondered if the Indian on the stamp had anything to do with cigars. If it is, I'll repurpose it into something more pleasant.

I thought ashtray at first but too short for a standing ashtray, must be a lamp base of some sort. I would search ebay from time to time to see if you can find a like base in lamp parts.
Just throwing out a stupid thought here....but couldn't something from ( lets say 1920 ) have a pattern number of something like 1981? Sometimes you have to look outside the box and see things different.....and not have a closed mind. So just wondering if it could be a pattern number - the 1981??

Looks like thread inside so something would have been screwed on to it, if a lamp base the cord would have gone up through the middle and there is no room in my opinion...I'm with antiquerose, not a date but maybe pattern name..and certainly looks older than that..love a good mystery...:-)
The problem with the lamp base theory is that there is no hole in the base. Also, the hole in the top of the rod is only the size of a toothpick. So I think that one can be eliminated.
Antiquerose, it's definitely not a date, as you said. I'm sure you are right about it being a pattern,style,or serial number.
Look at the style of the mark itself:It has a more 'savage' theme to it, something we began moving away from in the early 1900s, when we realised, Oh, Hey, They're Not Savage: Just Different!
I'm thinking it's Edwardian.

The small hole in the top is threaded. The hole is only 1 cm deep, and .5 cm across

blunderbuss, i was just eyeballing it earlier, but i pulled out my metric stick, and the center hole is indeed half a centimeter (not to be mistaken with millimeters). I tried to edit the post by deleting one photo and replacing it with a better photo of the screw hole, but it wouldn't allow me to add it.
