CanyonR, you assisted me many times.
Purchased Anderson's book on 'When Rain Gods Reigned'.
First two, pictures...Is this like one pictured on page 72, with the faint paint color. Is 7" tall. Possible age?
The second rain god has had something burn in the bowl. Incense? What would be the reason for burning something in the bowl? Cerimonial? What is the possible age?
Thanks again CR....for your knowledge
Yes, I'd say the first figure, despite having lost his little bowl, is very much like the one on page 72 of the book. It's cream-slipped, and of the rather standardized form that had developed by 1900 or so, has an "old-style" mouth instead of the slightly smiling one that came later, and has the painted designs. I'd date it ca.1905-1910.
The second one, with the cream slip and poster paint outlined in black, probably dates to the 1920s/1930s. The sooty bow is almost certainly a result of incense being burned in it. Not for any "ceremony," but likely because these were inexpensive and under-appreciated in the 1960s/1970s, and this one probably got caught up in the hippie/new age movement of that time period. A lot of incense was burned then, among other things. But it didn't have anything to do with ceremonies.
Thanks again CanyonR.
I figured the first in the 1905 range. Surprised by the age of second rain god with incense burning....
