    1" across, the tiny gears, etc. are embedded in the clean plastic top of the button. I cut these off of a sweater (I think), about 40 years ago. Has anyone ever seen them?

      LOL- yes, that is a smiley face- although I don't know if it was intended as such. I posted a photo of the backs for you.

      So my answer can not be correct. The back of the buttons look to be fairly old. If you have owned them for some 40 years, I can't begin to understand what's been put under the tops.
