What is this odd device, it has a cup that squeezes down with scissors action. It has a pointed end like half of a scissor blade with an attached half oval cup, when you close the scissor action, it seems to press down with a fitted paddle into the oval cup. Could be simple metal with brass finish. Found in a knickknack drawer.

It's an old brass candle snuffer. These are quite common.

Or rather for trimming the wick while it's still burning, without snuffing the candle. The burning end gets trapped in the little compartment on the scissors.

Sorry Efesgirl, maybe I was stating the obvious? I guess "snuffing a candle" indeed means trimming the wick while "snuffing out a candle" means extinguishing it. English is difficult... Not my mother tongue.

OlofZ - it can be used either way. :-))))
