Vinegar jar or whisky bottle?

I found this in my yard. I am intrigued because it is stamped with "BALL" on the bottom of the jar. I have Googled it every way I can think of and still cannot find what it is. Any ideas? I can tell you our house dates back to 1850 and we are the first to "dig for treasure".

My mother-in-law looked up whisky bottles and came across a bottle similar to this one. My husband and I found vinegar bottles online that resembled our bottle. I think the later may be our bottle because of the screw top.
